In our neck of the woods, window lights turn on at dusk this time of the year.
A tradition that was reportedly brought to the colonies by the Irish -They symbolized a safe haven, hope, and remembrance of absent family members.
My mother in law delivered our first box of wired candles, she bought at her jumble sale to our first home over four decades ago.
These involved running around the house at dusk and plugging them in…. Usually extension cords were also involved. The houses were old. Then came the timers which we thought were a miracle. Set it and forget it.
Fast forward to the dawn to dusk lights with electric eyes, another miracle.
I don’t remember exactly when battery operated window lights started to appear. My guess would be 20 years ago. Of all the cords I have cut in my lifetime, the window candle cord is one of my favorites. The batteries last well into the New Year. Some use C batteries, but our favorites use AA. We have a mix.
We have fewer windows to light now that we have downsized, but I still love coming home at night and seeing a light in the window.
