Great Blue Heron Visitor

There’s a heron that visits the pond in the back at dusk – It patiently watches and waits. Herons hunt solitarily by sight and stand stock still, sometimes on one leg before using it’s beak to spear a catch.

I find it it be a calming bird. When I see it fly in, I stop what I am doing and watch it instead. It is such a large wading bird, that it does not have many predators, but it has been losing habitat. They are protected from human interference under the 1918 Migratory Bird Protection Treaty.

Native Americans considered herons symbols of self reliance and determination. In folklore, Herons are symbols of good luck, prosperity and courage. I’ll take all three 🙂

I know how lucky I am to be able to share a plot of land with this bird. I hope the Heron knows how much I appreciate its steady and calm presence at the end of the day.
