
James Freeman, a freelance clarinetist and coffee enthusiast, began roasting five pounds of beans at a time in a tool shed in 2002. He opened a stand at the Berkeley Farmers’ Market, selling fresh-roasted beans that were 48 hours old. His stand evolved into Cafes and a subscription coffee service and now is partially owned by Nescafé.
Most recently, blue bottle has introduced instant espresso. It comes in single serve packets which I keep in my purse to enhance watered down coffee when I am in a variety of establishments. It makes a difference.
